How to drop everything and travel the world, told by those who are doing it

At least once in their life, of giving up everything and setting out to discover the world with a one-way ticket in your pocket. A desire that for many of us remains such, for various and possible reasons including work, friends, family, economic conditions and, perhaps, a pinch of fear. Elena and Davide, on the other hand, have overcome all these potential obstacles. On January 20, 2018, more than a year ago, they actually left and have not returned since. But let’s go in order and start from the beginning, that is, from before departure.

It’s 2017, we are in Turin. Elena is 35 years old and has a quiet job as a clerk. Davide, on the other hand, is 5 years older, he is a gardener in a villa on the outskirts of Turin and occasionally works for an audio service company. It is precisely from a reflection on Davide’s work that the spark comes from which the project to travel is born. “At that time I was realizing that my work situation needed a change – says Davide on the phone from New Zealand – I wanted to be sure to choose the right place to live and work and the only solution seemed to me to travel, to know new realities “.

At the end of August 2017 Davide leaves for a long tour through the United States. Elena stays at home but when Davide, 3 months later, returns and proposes to leave with him, she breaks the delay, quits her job and packs her bags. “I said to myself now or never – she remembers – I was a bit scared but also curious, so I calmed down thinking that in the end I could always go back”.
